The English as a Second Language (ESL) program complements the IB objectives at Field Elementary. It is an IB goal for each student to be proficient in reading, writing and speaking two languages. Currently, there are over 100 students in the ESL program who are studying English as their second language. Our students represent over 10 different countries and languages, adding to the multi-cultural environment at Field. The ESL department maintains the two-fold mission of:
1) supporting student instruction in the area of content learning in the regular classroom; and,
2) providing intense small group sessions for mastery of English language and literacy skills.
The development of the whole child is important. It is our priority to identify each child's educational needs and develop his of her academic talents. The ESL department is staffed with 5 certified linguistic specialists and a number of paraprofessionals to help our students realize their full potential. The ESL program at Field supports our school mission to "develop life long learners empowered to meet the challenges of tomorrow's world."
